Clem Jacob Hire and Red Kettle win major Award · 147 days ago

Clem Jacob Hire and Red Kettle Theatre Company have won a prestigious Allianz Business to Arts Award for their collaboration in staging Russell Hoban’s Riddley Walker in November 2007.

Their success in the category Best Sponsorship by a Small to Medium Enterprise was announced at the Business to Arts Awards ceremony last Tuesday June 17th. Guest of Honour at the Awards was our new Minister for Arts, Sport and Tourism Martin Cullen.

Riddley Walker was the biggest production ever staged by Red Kettle and one of the biggest artistic undertakings in the history of arts events in Waterford. It was the product of a great partnership between one of Waterford’s best loved and established arts groups and one of the most successful hire companies in the South East. The participation of Clem Jacob Hire in this partnership genuinely enabled Red Kettle to stage this epic production, having begun with a cast, a lumpy field, a tent, and little else: no power for lights or sound, no heat, no dressing rooms, no toilets, security, machinery, or seats for the audience. Enter Clem Jacob Hire from stage left to provide the production with generators, three marquees, floors, heaters, a Teleporter, diggers, toilets, floodlights, fences, two hundred gold padded chairs… the list goes on …

The acclaim that this accolade brings to the partnership is significant, with the Arts in Waterford being recognized on a national level, and with Clem Jacob Hire achieving such success after only two years in business. There was stiff competition in this category from other nationally well-respected companies. Other Awards on the night went to Ulster Bank, Dublin Theatre Festival and AIB.

REHEARSALS BEGIN FOR LITTLE RED KETTLE’S TIME QUEST

Little Red Kettle, Ireland’s leading children’s theatre company, is delighted to announce that it has gone into rehearsals for an amazing new play, Time Quest, written by Ben Hennessy and directed by Liam Meagher. This year’s epic production began rehearsals at Waterford Educate Together National School on July 16th. The cast of 39 Waterford children, aged 9 to 12 years, will be working full time for the next month with a crew of theatre professionals including Costume Designer Clare Horgan, Composer Jamie Beamish and Lighting Designer Jim Daly.

Earlier this year the cast was selected from over 300 Waterford children who attended workshop/auditions at Garter Lane. Once selected, they participated in Little Red Kettle’s theatre workshops over the Easter break. They played theatrical games, did improvisations and used their imaginations in making mad artistic creations. They also had a chance to get to know each other as well as Liam and Ben, who has written this year’s play specifically for them.

The play, set in the past, present and future in Waterford, France, Italy, Mongolia and Ancient Egypt, will stretch the imaginations and acting talents of the young performers. As well as learning archery, chemistry and some ninja moves cast members will be coached to speak French, Italian, German and Polish as part of their performances.

39 Waterford children are getting ready for an incredible journey through time. Join them and meet Cleopatra at 11, Leonardo at 10, Einstein as a boy genius and many more incredible figures from history….as kids!

Time Quest opens on Tuesday 14th August and runs until Saturday 18th August, 8pm at Garter Lane. There will also be a Pay What You Can Preview on 13th August. Tickets are available at the Garter Lane Box Office: tel: 051 855038 and online at www.garterlane.ie or by email at boxoffice@garterlane.ie.
