Allianz Business to Arts Awards 2008 · May 7, 01:44 PM

Red Kettle Theatre Company and Clem Jacob Hire have been shortlisted for the prestigious Allianz Business to Arts Awards for their collaboration in staging Russell Hoban’s Riddley Walker in November 2007.

Riddley Walker was the biggest production ever staged by Red Kettle, with a cast of 36 alongside a live percussive band and staged in a circus Big Top.

Red Kettle entered the project with a cast, a lumpy field, a tent, and not much else – no power for lights or sound, no heating, no dressing rooms, no costume or props rooms, no toilets, no security, no machinery, and no seats for the audience. Enter Clem Jacob Hire from stage left to provide the production with generators, three marquees, floors, heaters, a teleporter, diggers, toilets, floodlights, fences, two hundred gold padded chairs, the list goes on …

Riddley Walker was one of the single biggest artistic undertakings in the history of arts events in Waterford. It was also the product of a great partnership between one of Waterford’s most loved and established arts groups and one of the most successful hire companies in the South East. This truly was a partnership – the participation of Clem Jacob Hire genuinely enabling Red Kettle to stage this epic production. The relationship between both parties was highly developed with hands on participation by Clem Jacob and his team with continuous on-site advice and guidance.

With a 55% increase in nominations and a high quality of entries, the success of the two companies in reaching the shortlist stage for these esteemed national awards is significant .

The winners are to be announced at the Business to Arts Awards ceremony on Tuesday, June 17th in the RDS.

The location in a big top indicates intention: this is big, bold and from the second the lights go up, brilliant. THE IRISH TIMES
