Red Kettle Theatre Company are proud to present a new play based on the story of John Condon, the youngest allied soldier killed in the First World War and a native of Ballybricken, Waterford. John Condon was just 14 years of age when he was killed during the second battle of Ypres, on the May 24th 1915 – the first time gas was used in warfare.
This exciting and theatrical new work tells the story of this ordinary young fella – that walked the same streets as ourselves and found himself, with many more Irishmen, in some of the most horrendous places imaginable- living trench life – facing death on a scale unseen before or since. Men and boys – many of whom believed they were fighting for Home Rule, many no doubt, there for the adventure and many there due to their economic situation- but for whatever reasons – they were our neighbours, our cousins, our families and for reasons that had very little to do with them they have been ignored in the telling of our history – even denied their ‘Irishness’ – forgotten.
Magnificently theatrical and heartfelt Sunday Independent
Incredibly touching Waterford Today
